Osimo history

The origin of the town is located between the seventh and sixth centuries BC with penetration into the interior by the Greeks who gave it the name of Auximum to emphasize the high position in which it was, as it still is, located. This feature made it immediately object of targets and frequent attacks: memorable ones of the Gauls against which Osimani had to ask for help to the Romans, which ended however with the Osimo annex to its territory. It was surrounded by walls of which there are still some ruins that surround the center of the country ending up becoming much more important in Ancona. It was among the first to set itself up as free city around 1110 and then transforms into a feud Sforza and the Malatesta family who claimed their power of Osimo; to defend against popular uprisings likely was built inside a citadel of which currently remains no trace. Occupied by French troops at the end of the eighteenth century, the papal orbit returned a few years later to be permanently incorporated to the kingdom of Italy; finally, it is best remembered in the context of World War II to the 'Treaty of Osimo' with which Italy gives against the Yugoslav government some strips of land on the Istrian peninsula.
